Baker College is the biggest confidence trick of ALL TIME; No surprise that they are under Federal investigation.
Caveat emptor.
I went to the online campus, but all of the (remaining) Baker Campuses are being investigated.
My story: I went back to school for an Accounting degree. Degree 1= Chemistry.
One had to finish 80% of the coursework before they could/would set up an internship for you.
A few years back, I contacted the person who did the internships and she would answer the emails once every 3 days.
I sought internships myself, and one place that I found was called "Ladlas Prince."
I went into the building wearing a suit and tie, and it was this crummy little office with a couple of people wearing jeans/working off of laptops on tables likely found at Salvation Army.
And they were not offering internships!
When I FINALLY did get an appointment with Career Services (her name was "Tammy" or something), I went to the office and sat down face to face with this worn out, frightened little woman.
I suspect that she got cussed out 3~4 times a week by disgruntled students.
I mentioned to her that I had talked to a company called Ladlas Prince, and she lied: "Oh, that's a great company to work for."
And it was at That. Exact. Moment. that my *** detector exploded:
1. The requirements to finish 80% of your course work is because they need to get that money out of you before you find out that the internship is iffy--and NOT "practical knowledge."
2. Career Services is just telling you everything that you want to hear because they need to get you out of that office. If I had said "I looked up Gooni Googoo Accounting," she would have said the exact same thing - - unaware whether the company existed, or even had internships.
3. It's not like they have a list of places 1-100 to which they can send you. They just help you with your CV and hope that you might be able to wiggle into an accounting internship somewhere.
4. They only answer emails every 3 or 4 days is because more emails =more opportunities to get cussed out by people who find out they have been lied to.
As I did my day job and went to different factories and talked to their accountants, they told me that the going price for accountants at that time was about $12 an hour. (About 5 years ago.) Even temp agencies needed a CPA with 10 years of experience.
My Teaching Rabbi at my synagogue told me that at his accounting firm, when they wanted to hire people with a CPA, they would interview the top three candidates and offer them $35,000 per year--After all of the CPA exams and getting cornholed paying for Baker books and tuition. (That is $17.50 per hour. An 8-hour shift= $140. Meanwhile, you A local trucker easily makes $200-$300 per shift. 5 trips dry van from Detroit to Chicago is $97,500 per year.)
There was some lady who was a dean and her name was Jill-something-or-the-other.
She was (is?) a rip-roaring *** with the personality of a cattle prod.

It really is a good scam, when you think about it.
For the online division, you buy overpriced books that are actually a bunch of out of print textbooks merged together and then repackaged under the Baker label. (You can only buy the baker edition, but if you bought each of these textbooks separately they would probably cost $10-$15. But, because of the packaging they were more like $125 for selected bits and pieces of very old textbooks.)
Then, you go to classes and it is all done online with no lecture content.
You read the book, and solve the problems as best you can and submit assignments and take the online test.
The instructors are all part-time, and they would have some EXTREMELY limited office hours in between teaching and the work that they were doing out in the real world.

If somebody is looking for people to dupe... Their easiest marks are always and everywhere black people. When I actually went up to the Flint campus to purchase a book in an emergency, because the entire student body was black.

Lots of false promises to get your enrolled.
I was in the networking classes. They said they would available on campus which I thought was great!
They started changing them to online. If I wanted to teach myself I would do online classes. So I end up taking them to finish out my degree. So I am to the point to where I need an internship.
They could not find me an internship for 2 semesters.
I had to find my own. No job placement like they told me when they enrolled me for the 1st semester.

I earned my Associate's Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in HR, but never received the actual degree. They said I owe them money, but I don't. They even garnished my pay.

There should be a class action suit for all of us that was scammed at Baker College.
Was in the Echocardiogram Program. I got great grades, did not get into the program because there was no spots.
When I applied to the program this was never explained to me. This was about money. They kept accepting more and more students into the program and they did not have space for them. If you have any information to provide negatively about your experience at Baker please contact ProRepublica.
They have done many articles about Baker. The Department of Education is investigating them.
User's recommendation: Don’t attend Baker College!
Alumni with Truth About this School
This school is not for the light weight that wants to be granted a degree without working for it! You have to work to earn a good grade and the faculty are great at helping students succeed.
For those that believe they have been tricked by this school, it's probably because you were looking for a free ride to get a degree from a diploma mill.
Baker College is a reputable school that provides a sound education at a reasonable cost. If you don't want to work for yourself, then do not both to enroll in this school and instead go visit a school that allows late work, cheating, and the garbage that comes out of other schools that offer scams for degree programs.
User's recommendation: A great school but you have to be willing to work hard to succeed.

Scam you like crazy
Dont go to this place. They are scammers.
when i first started in 2013. I was told for the program i chose that they were teach the most up to date info for the class however they were teaching me stuff that was dared from 2003 which was not current with what i was being taught. Im also $12,991 in debt not including interest which jumps it to a little over $17,000. They encourage people to take out loans because youll be able to pay them off quickly once you graduate and get a job that they can help find.
Totally not true at all. i feel this place lied to me multiple times and didnt even care. why are you encouraging students to take out loans. tell them you can help with jobs and teach way outdated information not even relevant for the times.
its sickening how this place takes advantage of student. please do not go here.

Unable to further my degree
Graduated from Baker College of Jackson in 2009. Took me 5 years to complete my Bachelor of Human Services Degree.
Was told it was more advanced than a BSW and is the "new" upcoming career for socialwork. $76,000 later, the most I have made is $35,000 a year and that was only recent (2019). I tried to look into Masters degrees and was told my credits would not transfer and would need to take classes over again. In 2015, I made a decision to return to Baker to add to my degree in Forensics.
After one term, life took a turn and I withdrew from classes before grants and loan money were dispersed. Baker charged me for the whole term and never sent me a bill for the balance. I have since turned away from Child Welfare work due to burn out. I applied to get a Teaching Certificate and Baker declined to release my transcripts until I pay the balance ($2200) in full.
Didn't even know I owed it. The bill never went to collections. Everything related to Baker College has been disheartening to me. The Jackson Campus is all but closed, only offering a few classes.
I agree with most posts. I wish I had gone elsewhere for college.
User's recommendation: DO NOT TAKE CLASSES AT BAKER COLLEGE!

Thank God they're finally closing the college from *** Baker Flint destroyed my life...I was 10 weeks away from graduating their nursing program, with a GPA of 3.94 and Sandy Cook (psych clinical/lecture instructor) failed me in my psych clinical by 1% (I passed the lecture portion with a 4.0 by the way)...for basically the same BS reasons as that student who sued them recently (link to article below). It's good to know that I'm not the only one who agrees that asking relevant questions is NOT disruptive or aggressive behavior - it's SCHOOL - isn't that the whole point?!
But it also makes me sad that other people had to go through the same horrible experience that I did.
I REALLY hope that Sandy Cook isn't teaching anymore...God help us if she is. style="
I'm going to contact that lawyer...I think we need to have a chat lol.

Do not attend Baker
Wasted time, money and completely screwed over. They put me in classes I had already taken, classes that were irrelevant and set me back 2 semesters.
I returned to Davenport to learn that my classes couldn't be transferable because I had previously taken at Davenport and passed them.
I now have collections for the two semesters of irrelevant courses, which is preventing me from getting a mortgage loan. I had questioned Baker telling them I already had taken the courses but they said it was higher level classes, lies on top of lies.

Wasted time and money
I was in the game software program. I already had an associate degree but i wanted to go further and baker was local.
I have a family and dont make a lot of money so relocating wasnt an option. Before signing on to go there the recruiter told me they find internships for you because it was a requirement of graduation. The english teachers, art teachers etc all seemed knowledgeable and cared about their jobs. Thats all the classes you could really take the first couple years.
Its the people teaching the computer science classes that were terrible. For most of them it seemed to be a second job that they didnt really care about. Back to the internship i was always told you had to complete 70 percent of all courses before they would get you one,so i just dealt with it and kept on going. Once i got more into the computer science classes i noticed most material was extremely outdated.
Books were so far behind with programs and code that they were useless and you had to try and figure out everthing yourself. After 3 years they switched to a semester curriculum, and in the process changed my program to be solely taught online. This is where it really got bad. It seemed like no material was helpful for any assignments from being so outdated, and the online instructers were no help.
Again i kept going. Then i completed enough courses to be approved for my internship. When i inquired where i might be placed i was told the internship was a self placement. The oppisite i was told when i signed up.
I also dont understand why i would have to pay them for an internship course that they qouldnt be helping me find. Well i finished all my classes and still cant find an internship to accept me. This means i cant even graduate. Guess thats what helps them say that 97 percent of graduates have jobs in their field.
So now that all courses i can take are done ive dropped below full time and have to start paying loans back. With no degree to show for it. After 3 years and around 20000 dollars i have no more to show than my associate from another college i had before i started baker. I could have not gone to baker, and not found a job and be better off because id have no loans to pay back.
I still work in the same restaurant ive been working at for 8 years but now owe money.
Id be better off if i had never gone there. Don't do it.
Preferred solution: Full refund
Waste Of Money
After following the professional track for Diagnostic Medical Sonography, they changed the classes needed the semester before I was to apply to the program. So it turns out I needed to take an extra 3 courses and 4 courses I took on the old track were currently not needed.
When you add those 4 courses into dollars, you will understand my frustration. Then I find out I did not get into my first choice program which of course was DMS. But guess what ladies and gentlemen, I got into the BACHELORS program for RADIATION THERAPIST. So let me get this right.
I was not chosen for sonography program, but grades test scores were good enough for a tougher program. Could it be that it will add on two years versus the 12 months I would have had left in the sonography program. The kicker, the program is 1 hour and 30 minutes from my home! So what are my options now?
That is precisely what I am trying to figure out. But to any incoming/potential students, stay far away from any BAKER COLLEGE campus.

Preferred solution: Either get me in to my program or refund my money.
Completely Screwed
I attended Baker College Flint campus and online for Approx. two years.
I changed my degree during that time . Focused on the Associates in Mechanical Technology. I had to take some time off due to medical conditions. I was looking to return now and was told that the program I was enrolled in is no longer available.
Since some things in life have changed, I was interested in applying my 40-50 credits towards an associates in business admin, just to walk away with something for all that money spent. They only offer Associates in Culinary arts and criminal justice . But they informed me I could go for a bachelors ... So spend double the money ...
I feel trapped and not sure what to do..
I told them it felt like Baker was purposely trying to screw students over that were enrolled in programs that no longer exist. They replied with how to obtain my transcripts and basically take it elsewhere .
Do not attend baker at all
Flint nursing program really is a nightmare. If sabrina is still there she should be fired.
Actually the entire nursing program needs an overhaul. The only way to get through the program is to kiss as much *** as possible and become a teachers pet to get through. It's sickening. There are many better and cheaper colleges to attend, don't give them your money, because your money is all they want.
Loved hearing they're closing their flint and Clinton township campuses - the word is out that Baker sucks! A successful business does not close locations - a failing business does and calls it "consolidating." Just giving any people out there warning- odds are you will not graduate from baker - look up their graduation rate - and you will be stuck with tons of debt and classes that are hard to transfer, if at all.
Do yourself a favor and steer clear of baker! I wish I would have!

Verified ReviewerDon't Even Think About it...
If you are a smart, inquisitive person with ambition, drive, and ability, I BEG of you, don't even go within 25 miles of Baker College campus, let alone think about attending BC. Baker College has a simple formula 1) Get them in 2) Get them to pay in, via federal loans, as much money as possible, then 3) Get rid of them. Also, make sure that you can get as many people, regardless of whether they are college material or not (it doesn't matter to Baker), and keep their money rolling in.
You would think that a place that has a nursing school would recruit good professors, want to train their students in a way that will make them good nurses and feel good about what they are doing, and eventually produce a quality product when it comes to the nurses who come out the other end. Actually, I have to give HUGE kudos to any person with the guts, political acumen, and high "BS" tolerance that you must have to get through their nursing program.
I got into their nursing program, after having to spend a lot of money on some really badly taught classes (that, even with a BA and a Masters degree they said I needed for the nursing school). In fact, the most arrogant, self-satisfied, intolerable *** who every taught science is the "gatekeeper" to their nursing program. I can't remember his name, but he was absolutely horrible to have as a professor. As it turns out, I got good enough grades in his classes to get into nursing school at Baker. Wow, too bad THAT happened!
My first term at BC nursing wasn't that bad. I had GREAT classmates, a really bright and highly motivated bunch. We all got through first term with no big problems, and I felt good about the upcoming second term. That's when I realized that everything, I mean every single thing that you did at Baker, was a referendum on your continuing existence as a nursing student there. If you failed one part of one part of your practical, you were OUT. Limited teaching of the skills, maximum results expected, and no room for error. In fact, you pretty much had to be perfect to get through.
The worst part was, and I'll give this person a special name, was "Nurse Ratchett." After introducing herself as the greatest nurse that ever inhabited planet Earth (no kidding, she considered herself the "perfect" nurse, and there wasn't even anyone who was a close second. She was "immaculate"--she really believed this!). She was--and I say this as someone who has spent almost my entire life in schools in one capacity or another--the most incompetent teacher of any subject I have ever had the gross displeasure of being subjected to. She could not write legibly on a dry erase board. She mispronounced even the most basic of medical terms. If you asked for clarification of anything she stated in lecture--and this is no scheisse--she would yell at you and demean you in front of everyone! "YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN LISTENING!" After a short time, it was obvious: she was functionally illiterate, and didn't want anyone to know. Yeah, she was somehow able to fudge her way through nursing school during the dark ages, and must have paid someone to write papers (if any were required) for her. She was also dyslexic, which is why she couldn't write legibly on the board, or spell things properly (although, God help the person who corrected her spelling errors!). She hated her students for being bright, inquisitive, LITERATE, people who were trying their hardest to be good at nursing. I mean, she really HATED you for trying to be a nurse because it meant that she actually might have competition! I looked up the criteria for "Pathological Narcissism" in my copy of the DSM IV-TR and she solidly had six of eight (I think that was the number) character traits that define this disorder, and probably had the other two, but I couldn't confirm. She was and is a nightmare on two legs.
She also taught the capstone course in the nursing program, which meant she decided whether you got to be a nurse, or not. After most of the class one year ahead of mine finished her class in good standing she stated that she "would not write any letters of recommendation for any of the students [of that] class, because none of them were up to [her] standards." No, she wouldn't write letters of recommendation because she COULDN'T write them, and was too bound up in her own sense of self-importance that she couldn't admit it.
After half a term of this, I was done. I just stopped trying because I saw that there was little use to try. One could rack up $80,000 in debt, and Nurse Ratchett could fail you after three years of banging your head against the Baker wailing wall of nursing, and you your non-degree from BC wouldn't so much as help you get a job sweeping floors in a nursing home.
As it turns out, I was one of the lucky ones. Of the 30 people who started in our program, there are seven left. So many failed out that they had to split the cohort into two parts, and fold them into incoming cohorts to cover up the fact that they had destroyed their first BSN class.
I won't even go into all of the "learning" experiments they tried on us--which we had to pay for, and were absolute nightmares, not to mention supreme time wasters, and helped to further drive down your grades. Oh, and of course, it was YOUR fault if the thing didn't work. All things "Baker" are always the student's fault. The faculty of the nursing school is immaculate, and they will be the first to tell you so. You are a nobody, and you'd better not forget it. That's how they treat you there.
Recently got together with one of the survivors of the "Lost Cohort." She had the most incredible stories about the horrors of what happened after I left. I won't go into the details, except for the fact that it got much, much worse after I left. I am so glad that I got out when I did. That's the good news. The bad news is that I got NOTHING out of it except for $14,000 of debt and credits that transfer NOWHERE. That's right, no credible university or college will accept transfer credits from any BC campus.
So, be advised: there is no worse place on the planet to go for "higher" education than this shoddy, sorry excuse for a "skin the pilgrim" horror show. As I said, don't even go near the place, let alone attend. It will not end well.
Medical Transcription Program
I went to Baker College in 2007 for the medical transcription program. After a few months I heard that medical information was being sent to India for transcription because it was cheaper.
I went to see my counselor Amy Savage who guaranteed I would be able to get an MT job here in the US. After graduating in 2009 I was NOT able to get an MT job. Still to this day, cannot find one. Soon after, I found out that Baker College has deleted the MT program.
They lied to me and took my outrageous amount of money for a program that was going to be obsolete. I have over $26,000 for student loans for a CERTIFICATION program that required me to take many unnecessary classes. Baker claims 98% of graduates are employed. More lies!
There are many of us MT graduates that are not working as MTs. Being employed at McDonalds shouldn't count towards Bakers 98% employment rate. My student loans just keep getting higher and higher because I cannot pay them and Navient keeps putting them in forbearance.
I'll never get these paid off. I wish Baker College would've been honest with me about the MT program so I could've taken different classes.
- Let me register with no high school diploma

Baker College, not a college at all
I regrettably transferred to Baker College of Cadillac from Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City. My degree was in Business Admin.
Baker refuses to accept the majority of incoming credits so that they can profit from making you take all of their worthless courses, and their outgoing process to another school is much of the same. My biggest complaint in regards to the classes themselves is the way they are taught. You almost always have a mix of online classes (by choice, which looked good for telecommuting purposes), but whether you attend the building or online, THE TEACHERS DO NOT TEACH. Everything copy and paste, read chapters and do a discussion.
YOU PAY TUITION TO TEACH YOURSELF. The online courses are incredibly worthless. You read chapters and discuss them with fellow students. Points are given for making comments on other´s remarks on the reading.
Any questions regarding the material are answered by the instructor telling you to refer to the course syllabus. The actual classes are slightly more structured, but still in the same vein of teaching yourself. It is more than obvious that the staff is underpaid and do not fully grasp the content or have any passion whatsoever in actually helping you learn. At the end of my time here, I was forced to drive from Cadillac to Fremont, MI for a 1 HOUR seminar in which student exchanged and read each other´s mock resumeś, which is beyond me why this could´t have been done at the home building.
My entire ¨education¨ here reminded me of high school. It has been many years since I attended here, but I was driven to write this review because my girlfriend is currently experiencing the same pain after resuming her education that was paused due to our daughter being born. It will take her several more years to complete a 4 year degree, while she has 4 years of classes already completed. I would recommend, by any means necessary, that you explore and exhaust all possible options for further education, and if this is the only choice, research in depth the program you are choosing to attend and what the outcome is.
Thank god, I used my degree only for one year, which at that rate of pay would have taken me over 15 years to pay off my tuition. I used that job to switch positions and ultimately transferred to a company where i now make over $80k a year, albeit in a completely unrelated field. I am hoping my girlfriend can finish and the promise of employment is fulfilled.
Once again, there is nothing here worth doing except possibly the medical field, which still does not offer top positions within, going as far as I believe an R.N. (by no means a bad job, just be prepared to teach yourself the whole way, and attend far more years than originally stated.) Best of luck, I hope this review steers someone away from the mistake I made.
- Optimism i had my first day
- Instructors
- Teaching myself throughout my entire degree
